BSF killings: Yatra suspended as Kashmir seeths in anger



Anger has gripped Jammu and Kashmir over the killing of four civilians by Border Security Force (BSF) in Dharam village in Gool-Ramban of Jammu division on Thursday Curfew was clamped in Srinagar and major towns of the Valley as a precautionary measure to foil the Lal Chowk march and avoid the escalation in the situation on Friday.

However, people defied curfew and clashed with police at number of places.
Two people were injured when police lathicharged and fired smoke shells to
quell a mob at Kurhama in Ganderbal district. “Miscreants pelted stones in Kurhama, Ganderbal. Two miscreants were injured,” a police spokesman said.

Stone-pelting between people and policemen was reported from various areas of the Valley. “The situation so far is under control throughout Kashmir Valley,” he said. Over 30 people have been injured in stone pelting incidents across state. The injured include 10 policemen, seven CRPF men and five civilians.

A protest march was held in Gool area where in people raised slogans demanding the arrest of the BSF and police personnel responsible for the killings of four people. Shouting “Qatloon ko Pesh Karo.. (Expose the murderers)”, people marched after Friday prayers demanding action from the government.

Cold desert of Kargil was also rocked by the protests over the killing and alleged desecration of holy Quran.  Anjumane Jamiyat Ullama has called for bandh on Saturday against the incident.

Authorities also halted the Amarnath yatra in Jammu and did not allow the pilgrims to proceed to holy cave shrine from the Bagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu. The step was taken in view of precarious law and order situation in the Valley.

In a rare gesture the state cabinet condemned the excessive use of force in Gool area and extended condolences to the bereaved families.

The cabinet also announced Rs five lakh each to the next of kin of those killed in the incident. It further ordered that government job will be provided to a family member of those killed in the incident.
